Dr. Kirtane is a graduate of Princeton University and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California – San Francisco. Dr. Kirtane is a practicing Cardiologist with an interest in coronary and peripheral intervention and assumed the directorship of the NYP/Columbia cardiac catheterization laboratories in 2015. In addition to his clinical commitments at CUMC, Dr. Kirtane has a strong interest in clinical education and research, serving as Chief Academic Officer of the Center for Interventional Vascular Therapy. Despite his teaching, research and administrative commitments, he maintains an active clinical involvement performing more than 100 PCI per year with special interest in the treatment of calcified lesions, chronic total occlusions, bifurcations, and diffuse disease. He is a regular TAVI operator and certified implanter for the Medtronic Evolut R and Edwards Sapien 3 transcatheter aortic valves. He participated in more than 160 MitraClip implantations in London and Florence and has recently started direct annuloplasty with the CardioBand. Professor Di Mario pioneered the use of intracoronary Doppler, pressure measurement, intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, and near infrared spectroscopy. He was PI of the OPTICUS trial, failing to demonstrate superiority of IVUS guided stenting, and of the Lipid Rich Plaque study, due to report at TCT 2018. He was Principal Investigator of the DESTINI trial, using Doppler CRF to identify lesions in need of stenting, and of the CARESS in AMI trial, a large multicentre trial showing that patients who receive fibrinolytic therapy for ST-elevation myocardial infarction benefit from early angioplasty. This trial and a subsequent meta-analysis have led to a change in the European Society of Cardiology and AHA/ACC Guidelines for treatment of STEMI patients. He cooperated with Dr Davies to the validation of iFR to assess lesion severity and discriminate the contribution of individual lesions, and with Dr Lyon in the intracoronary delivery of SERCA-2 genes via adenoviral vectors in the CUPID2 trial.

Between 2010 and 2012 he served as research associate at the intravascular imaging core lab at University Hospitals, Case Medical Center, Cleveland, OH, where he advanced his knowledge in the use of intracoronary physiology and imaging, particularly OCT. Upon his return to Brazil, practiced as an interventional cardiologist at Dante Pazzanese Institute, developing experience in complex PCI and intracoronary imaging and physiology. Over the last decade, he also has been involved in clinical research on the assessment of novel drug-eluting stents and bioresorbable scaffolds and was the leading investigator of the iSIGHT trial, proposing an algorithmic approach in the use of intravascular imaging to guide PCI. In parallel with his clinical activities, he served as director of the OCT core lab at the Cardiovascular Research Center from 2012 to 2020. During this time, he developed OCT analysis methods for several studies on novel devices (e.g. bioresorbable scaffolds, drug-eluting stents, specialty balloons) in various clinical scenarios (e.g. stable CAD, ACS, bifurcation lesions, high-bleeding risk patients, etc). Since 2022, he has practiced as the Director of Invasive Cardiovascular Imaging at the Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, and is the director of the Intravascular Imaging and Physiology Core Laboratories at the Yale Cardiovascular Research Group.

He is now the principal investigator of the international FAME 3 trial comparing bypass surgery to fractional flow reserve guided percutaneous coronary intervention. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation, JACC Cardiovascular Interventions, and Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions. He was the principal investigator on an R01 and is the PI on an R61/R33 NIH award evaluating cardiac allograft vasculopathy early after transplantation. Dr. Fearon’s clinical activities include not only percutaneous coronary intervention, but also transcatheter aortic valve replacement. He was a coauthor on the PARTNER 2A Trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Brilakis has authored or co-authored over 600 manuscripts and has written the Manual of CTO Interventions, now in its second edition. He directs the Complex Coronary Interventions Webcast series and is on the Board of the Cardiovascular Innovations Foundation. He is an associate editor for Circulation and an editorial board member and reviewer for several journals and grant agencies. He is lecturing and proctoring at several institutions in the United States and abroad.

His clinical interests include diagnostic and interventional coronary angiography, peripheral angiography and endovascular intervention. His is involved in several clinical trials involving patients with cardiovascular disease and in cardiac imaging. He is also the Chair of the American College of Cardiology Task Force for Appropriate Use Criteria for Cardiovascular Procedures and is Chair of the American Heart Association Diagnostic and Interventional Cath Committee. Patel's interest in cardiac imaging, quality of care, cardiac devices is also evident in his research. His integration of these efforts into his roles at Duke was recognized in 2010 when he received the prestigious Duke Cardiology Fellowship Mentor Award. In 2011, Dr. Patel was named the endowed John Bush Simpson Assistant Professor of Cardiology. In 2013, Dr. Patel received the Robert M. Califf Faculty clinical research Award. Currently, Dr. Patel is leading an effort to redesign the delivery of care to patients undergoing invasive catheterization procedures in the health system with a specific aim of measure and providing individualized, patient centered, innovative, and efficient care.

Dr. Mack has spent much of his career working closely with interventional cardiologists to improve the treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease. He played critical roles in the SYNTAX Trial, which compared percutaneous coronary intervention with coronary artery bypass graft surgery in patients with three-vessel or left main disease, and the PARTNER Trial, which explored the safety and efficacy of transcatheter aortic valve replacement. He has also authored or co-authored over 400 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Mack is currently the Director of the Cardiovascular Service line at Baylor Scott & White Health System and Chairman of the Baylor Plano Research Center in Texas. Previously, he served as Medical Director Cardiovascular Disease and Transplantation at Medical City Dallas Hospital. Dr. Mack was President of the Society for Thoracic Surgeons (STS) in 2011 and a Past President of the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE), the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association (STSA), and the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS). He is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and the American College of Cardiology.

His clinical expertise is in complex coronary intervention including CTOs, ultra low volume/zero contrast PCI, and renal denervation. His research interests are in comparative effectiveness studies for cardiovascular diseases, particularly stable ischemic heart disease, acute coronary syndromes, hypertension and dyslipidemia. Dr. Bangalore has received grants from the National Institutes of Health, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, American Heart Association and from the industry. He has published over 350 articles in leading national and international journals including the NEJM, JAMA, Lancet, Circulation and JACC. He is the principal investigator of the ISCHEMIA CKD trial, which is a randomized trial in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease and abnormal stress test, carried out in 33 countries and up to 350 clinical sites. The trial is testing the effectiveness of an initial invasive strategy of cath and revascularization with optimal medical therapy versus a conservative strategy of optimal medical therapy alone in patients with chronic kidney disease. His other areas of interest include comparative effectiveness of coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) vs. percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), evaluating the efficacy and safety of various stent types in patients undergoing PCI, including patients with diabetes and those in patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction and comparative effectiveness of drug eluting stents vs. bare metal stents. He has won a number of awards including the Dr. Gregory Braden Memorial Interventional Cardiology Fellow of the Year Award from the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention and the Douglas P. Zipes Distinguished Young Scientist award from the American College of Cardiology.

At the national level, Dr. Rao serves as the Editor-in-Chief for Circulation Cardiovascular Interventions, the interventional journal of the American Heart Association’s flagship Circulation family of journals. He is the President-Elect for The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, and serves on the program committees of the ACC Scientific Sessions, the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics conference, and the SCAI Scientific Sessions. He was the chairman of the 2017 ACC-i2 Summit and was the chair of the SCAI 2019 Annual Scientific Session. In addition, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the ACC CathSAP 5 program and is currently the co-chair of the ACC Collaborative Management Pathway for Interventional Cardiology. His main research interests are pharmacological and interventional therapies for acute coronary syndromes, as well as bleeding and blood transfusion complications among patients with ischemic heart disease. Dr. Rao has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers, and is the co-Editor-in-Chief of the seminal textbook on transradial procedures titled “Best Practices for Transradial Approach in Diagnostic Angiography and Intervention.”

Dr. Ghazzal has upheld an academic rigor in all his professional life, becoming an internationally renowned interventional cardiologist who has excelled as a highly accomplished clinician, researcher, and teacher/ mentor. He was promoted to Professor of Medicine at Emory University, Atlanta, GA, where he has been a full-time faculty member since 1990, after completing his fellowship training at the same institution from 1985 to 1990. Dr. Ghazzal has published extensively in the cardiology literature, including high-quality original papers and many other reviews, editorials, book chapters, and video seminars. He is regularly sought after by international organizations for clinical lectures, tutorials, and other CME activities in the area of interventional cardiology. As a director of the Interventional Fellowship Program at Emory, Dr. Ghazzal has played an instrumental role in the success of the training program there, one of the premier programs in the United States. He has been a member of a large number of prospective multicenter clinical trials, including being the local principal investigator at Emory. He was an associate editor of the popular 'Cardiosource', the official teaching website of the American College of Cardiology. He was also the co-chair of the international distant learning program of the College. He is an editorial consultant for JACC Cardiovascular Interventions and the American Journal of Cardiology. Dr. Ghazzal is an Alpha Omega Alpha member and has received many honors, including the Medical Leadership Award from the National Association of North America, and the Excellence in Teaching Award from Emory University. In 2008 Dr. Ghazzal joined the American University of Beirut where he functioned as the Deputy to the Executive Vice President/Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Medical Center in addition to his duties as an interventional cardiologist.
